In the Name of (Bottomless) Love

The earlier entry was getting way too long, so I have broken out my favorite bath time observation: Mothers, aunties and babies. Finally they come out. Here are five elephants, one mother (Dok Ngern, meaning 'silver flower') and her 18 month old baby boy (Chang Yim, meaning 'smiling elephant') and the other mother (Mae Bua Tong, meaning 'golden lotus') and her 6 year old daughter (Tang Jan, meaning 'golden moon') and 21 month old baby girl (Faa Mai, meaning 'new day')

The babies are playful and boisterous and scramble ahead to get to the water. The mothers follow closely very attentive to the babies and their surroundings. The mothers are very protective and will get into a protective mode (a very distinctive stance) pretty quickly at the sight of noisy observers. They will not hesitate charge at you if you get in between them and the babies. Notice mother holding baby with her trunk -- she is tending to both babies.

The little ones decide they do not want to bathe in the water, so Mom take both babies along with other mother and big sister to the mud pit, a favorite place for the eles because it is warm and... it's mud. One mom, Dok Ngern, was out of photo range but she is following too.

Faa Mai having fun! So cute:

Eventually, all of the elephants return back to the fields but Faa Mai decides she wants to explore the other side of the field, so Mae Bua Tong (mother) follows. This was so moving for me to watch. Faa Mai, is playing happily, and momma is proud and watchful. There are constant moments of caressing and cuddling and then she follows Faa Mai if she starts to wander off. Lots of pictures here but the progression is sweet.

Baby mine, don't you cry.
Baby mine, dry your eyes.
Rest your head close to my heart,
Never to part,
Baby of mine.

Little one when you play,
Don't you mind what they say.
Let those eyes sparkle and shine,
Never a tear,
Baby of mine.

If they knew sweet little you,
They'd end up loving you too.
All those same people who scold you
What they'd give just for the right to hold you.

From your head down to your toes,
You're not much, goodness knows.
But you're so precious to me,
Sweet as can be,
Baby of mine.

All those same people who scold you,
What they'd give just for the right to hold you.

From your head down to your toes
You're not much, goodness knows.
But you're so precious to me,
Sweet as can be,
Baby of mine.
